Dynamic Replacement (DR) technique is used for compressible soils where fine contents are high e.g., soft clays, silt, sabkha, soils with organic content etc.
A large diameter column can be constructed with granular materials by dropping heavy weight pounder from a height of 10-20m. These columns are like stone columns but have much larger diameter and thus can cater for heavier loads efficiently. The DR columns have very high stiffness thereby making weaker soils capable of taking large structural loads without excessive settlement.
Dynamic Replacement technique is used to increase the soil bearing capacity and reduce total and differential settlement. In this technique, variety of granular materials can be used e.g., gravels, granular sands, crushed stone, concrete rubble.
